Well, as the name suggests, counting cards is the "art" or "skill" of figuring out the number or percentage of Aces and 10s in a deck of cards. The theory is that the higher the incidence of these cards, the greater the advantage for players over the dealer and the lower the risk to place larger bets.
It is important to note that card counting is mostly applicable to land-based casinos as online casinos tend to "shuffle the pack" before each new hand is dealt. This means that no trends can be recognised in terms of the occurrence of particular cards so "card counting" is will not give online gamers an edge over the casino.
Also, contrary to popular belief, even with many years of card counting under your belt, there are no guarantees that you will bankrupt the casino - there is no sure-fire way of beating the casino, apart from cheating which we strongly do not recommend. If you are interested in finding out more about the different card counting techniques, many books are available on the subject.
Regarding the legalities of card counting, you may be surprised to learn that card counting is not illegal although most casinos would have you believe the opposite for obvious reasons. It is generally accepted that a player may freely use any stimuli that the environment offers as long as there is no complicity between the player and the dealer. However, be aware that if a casino takes a dislike to you, they are well within their rights to kick you out on your butt, no questions asked.
We recommend, however, that you follow the user-friendly tips found in this site and discover the joys of winning at blackjack in the comfort of your own home.
